Partial list, as identified by John Douglas, the originator of Behavioral Science, and the FBI's first Criminal Profiler. While serial killers can be classified by many categories (such as gang murderer, Angel of Death type killers, etc.), they are split into three main categories:

These serial killers typically have above average IQs. Most have a general knowledge of forensic science and are capable of covering up their crimes. They typically murder their victims in one place, and leave the bodies in another. Many of them use subterfuge to procure their victims; feigning injuries, posing as law enforcement officers, etc. This type of killer is typically a white male, aged 25-45, nondescript, generally the quiet type. Most of them maintain "normal" social function when needed, and are sometimes successful family providers with good relationships.

Organized serial killers may contrive intricate kill patterns (the killer in the film Se7en, for example), and can be motivated by a cry for historic fame; making their mark in history. However, the recently implemented Patriot Act allows law enforcement officials to withhold the names of apprehended serial killers from the press, with the provision that said murderer is a terror suspect; thereby negating the killer's entire motive.

Budding Serial Killers in the CSI Franchise
Disorganized/asocial
Disorganized/asocial offenders are often of low intelligence, and commit their crimes impulsively. After the murder, the offender will normally leave the body at the scene. They usually carry out "blitz" attacks, leaping out and attacking their victims without warning, and will typically perform whatever rituals they feel compelled to carry out (e.g., necrophilia, mutilation, cannibalism, etc.) once the victim is dead. They rarely bother to cover their tracks but may still evade capture for some time because of a level of cunning that compels them to keep on the move. They are often socially inadequate, with few friends, and they may have a history of mental illness and be regarded by acquaintances as eccentric or even "a bit creepy".

Edmund Kemper and Albert DeSalvo are examples of unorganized serial killers.

Mixed
Mixed serial killers are the hardest to catch, as it is difficult to tell that their murders are even connected in any way. Aileen Wuornos may be classified as a mixed type, as her murders were completely random and unmotivated by any ascertainable cause.
